News about events and such like

5 July 2008

Please submit information about writing events – readings, festivals, visiting authors – and news about new initiatives here. Please note that posts have to be approved before they are published and we are a small team, so there may be a short delay before your news item appears.

Bucket of Frogs”, the twenty-sixth edition of New Writing Scotland, will be available in August from all good bookshops, ISBN 9780948877872, containing new short fiction and poetry from fifty contributors.

Submissions are invited for the twenty-seventh edition, to be published in summer 2009, from writers resident in Scotland or Scots by birth, upbringing or inclination. Poetry, drama, short fiction or any other creative works may be submitted but not full-length plays or novels, though self-contained extracts are acceptable. The work must be neither previously published nor accepted for publication and may be in any of the languages of Scotland.

Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only. You should provide a covering letter, clearly marked with your name and address. All submissions are assessed anonymously, so please do NOT put your name or other details on the individual works. If you would like to receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your manuscript, please enclose a stamped addressed postcard. If you would like to be informed if your submission is unsuccessful, or if you would like your submissions returned, you should enclose a stamped addressed envelope with sufficient postage. Submissions should be sent by 30 September 2008, in an A4 envelope, to the address below. We are sorry but we cannot accept submissions by fax or e-mail.

Please be aware that we have limited space in each edition, and therefore shorter pieces are more suitable – although longer items of exceptional quality may still be included. A maximum length of 3,500 words is suggested. Please send no more than two short stories and no more than six poems.
